A Weekly Message from Irving Middle School (2)

Please ask your child to take a look at our OVERFLOWING Lost and Found! Pictured above is a small portion of our lost and found. We have coats, hoodies, jackets, lunch boxes, shoes, and water bottles. Parents/Guardians may check lost and found for their child's items, Monday-Friday from 7:30-3:00 and on Thursday, June 13 & Friday, June 14 from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm.

Any items remaining after Friday, June 14 will be donated.

Greetings, Irving Families!

This week we wrapped up the initial SOL testing - we are grateful to our testing team who prepared for and ran our testing sessions and to the students who worked diligently throughout each test. Next week we will be holding makeup sessions and retakes as appropriate. While we are done with testing, we are not finished with instruction and we reminded students today that we still have 4 weeks of school and a lot of exciting culminating events on the way.

Speaking of culminating events, our annual 8th Grade Celebration is on Friday, June 7, from 6:00-8:00 pm. The SCA has selected Under the Stars for the theme for the evening and we look forward to celebrating with our students. Please see below for more details about the celebration - especially the information about volunteering to be a chaperone and how to donate snacks. I cannot stress enough that this is NOT a formal event and there is no need to wear any formal attire. We have a lot of fun playing games, having snacks, and dancing the night away!

Lastly, I would like to thank our outgoing PTA Board - Robert Johnson - President, Jennifer Johnson - Vice President, Cathy Wray - Secretary, and Christy Whiteaker - Treasurer. I am so appreciative of the support you have shown our staff and students over the past two years. I wish them all the best as they move on to high school! This week the PTA nominated and elected the new PTA Executive Board. Please join me in welcoming our new board: President - Patty Stevens, Secretary - Kelly Hempson and Treasurer - Tanika Campbell. I look forward to working with the new board next school year. If you are interested in joining the PTA or supporting one of the PTA committees, please see the information below regarding the PTA.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Take Care!

Cindy Conley

8th Grade Celebration

Friday, June 7 from 6:00-8:00 pm

  • The purpose of this event is to have fun and celebrate one last time as a class before they head out for the summer and on to high school.
  • Only 8th grade students attending Irving Middle School may attend.
  • The 8th grade celebration is NOT a formal event.
  • This event will be in our 7th grade gym and out on our tennis courts/black top (weather permitting). Students should be comfortable to dance, play games, and likely take a lot of pictures in our photo section with the horseman backdrop.
    • In previous years, students have worn a pair of slacks and a polo type shirt or a skirt/blouse or dress, again NO formal attire or high heels are required or recommended for this event (often high heels are taken off within about 5 minutes of arriving…).
  • Students often attend in groups, so having a “date” is NOT a requirement to attend.
  • We will be utilizing outdoor spaces for the event - fingers crossed for good weather!
  • We need volunteers to make this celebration a success - please see the link below to volunteer as a chaperone for the 8th Grade Celebration and/or donate snacks. Thank you in advance for helping us make this celebration a successful event for our students.

Message from the Clinic

Dear Parent or Guardian:

The school clinic is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time (12:15pm) on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

Thank you Julie Peter RN BSN

Library News

Parents, I have some intel from our middle school students from our weekly “Irving Says” polls: When asked whether they’d like to go to Busch Gardens or to King’s Dominion, 41% of students answered with “Busch Gardens,” while the remaining 59% chose “King’s Dominion.” My guess is that your child would find something enjoyable at either place, given that I overheard a lot of debate and deliberation when students casted their votes!

May 29 is the due date for all library books to be returned. Students have received reminder notices this week about the books they have out. We will be sending reminders to both students and parents/guardians just before the Memorial Day Weekend, with the hopes of students locating and packing up library books to be brought back after the long weekend.

Stay tuned for full details of Irving’s Summer READ! Program at the beginning of June. This program will be for rising 7th and 8th grade students.
