My mother was Danish and my father was 1st generation Polish American so food was very interesting in my family. My mother made pierogi sometimes and other times my Dad would pick them up at the Lithuanian church where the ladies would make them one day a week as a fund raiser. She would simmer in water while frying chopped onions in butter, when the onions were done in went the pierogi to brown. Her magic cheese sauce was whole milk with slices of American cheese melted in it, kind of a pour man’s queso and we would each get a small bowl to dip our pieces of pierogi in. Childhood comfort food.
